A daily 5 minute news wrap for English learners and people with disability.

Welcome to SBS News in Easy English, I'm Hannah Hodson.

Protesters have gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Canberra, calling for an apology and compensation over the deaths of aid workers in Gaza, including Australian Zomi Frankcom.

Ms Frankcom was killed in an air strike on an aid convoy in April 2024.

Last month Israel decided not to pursue a criminal investigation, finding no criminal misconduct.

Protesters are also calling for Israeli ambassador Hillel Newman to be expelled from Australia.

Social media law reforms are being introduced to parliament today, including a measure to force digital platforms to offer users an opportunity to opt-out of algorithms.

Communications Minister Anika Wells says if companies including Meta, Google and TikTok do not give users the option to turn off algorithms, they should face penalties.

The draft bill is being criticised for a lack of detail but the government says it will seek expert advice.

Independent MP Zali Steggall supports the move, rejecting criticism that it will hurt businesses.

"Basically, businesses are worried they can't prey on people for their products through an algorithm people aren't asking to see, right. So I think let's get real - the ultimate choice from a consumer point of view is people decide they can sign in or can opt-in to these products. Businesses have many means to get to consumers and customers."

A new report has found Stolen Generations survivors and their descendants face greater health and well being challenges than other Indigenous Australians of the same age.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare says almost half of Indigenous Australians were Stolen Generations descendants in 2022-23.

Survivors were almost three times as likely to have severe or profound disability, while descendants were more likely to report high psychological distress.

Many survivors aged over 50 also face long-term health problems, financial stress and psychological distress.

93 year-old actor Ellen Burstyn has won a gold lion at the Venice Film Festival, for lifetime achievement.

She is one of few performers to secure the coveted triple crown; winning an Emmy, Tony and Academy Awards throughout her decades-long career.

The American industry veteran, who starred in the famous horror movie, The Exorcist, shared her lifelong method of looking for the white line on the stage to hit her mark - a guide she says can be applied more broadly.

"And I just want to close now and say how deeply appreciative of this beautiful Golden Lion and hope, no, no, and pray, that my own country will very soon, find its own white line."

To tennis,

Elena Rybakina has beaten Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4 to reach the US Open quarter-finals.

She will face China’s Zheng Qinwen, who came from behind to beat Iga Swiatek.

Coco Gauff is also through after beating 18-year-old Iva Jovic.

And that's the News in Easy English, I'm Hannah Hodson.
