Australia has won 2-0 in its first World Cup match against Türkiye in a Group D clash at Canada's Vancouver BC Place stadium.

Connor Metcalfe scored the second goal just fifteen minutes before end time, after Nestory Irankunda scored their opening counterattacking goal at the 27th minute.

Speaking at halftime, Socceroos assistant coach Paul Okon told SBS on the ground that Türkiye will come out firing.

"But we're a fit side, we can match anyone. If we need to suffer, we'll do it. We need to continue to be good with the ball."

Türkiye's Captain Hakan Calhanoglu had earlier [[Saturday]] said his side was more talented than Australia, predicting they would dominate the game.

Australia will next face USA on June 20 at 0500am AEST.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will convene his security cabinet to discuss a proposed agreement between the United States and Iran.

The meeting follows reports the two countries are preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict, although Iran's Foreign Ministry has denied any deal is imminent.

Israeli media report officials are concerned the proposed agreement does not adequately address Iran's ballistic missile program and nuclear activities.

The Assistant Minister for Immigration, Matt Thistlewaite, has thanked lifeguards and bystanders who stepped in to rescue a woman bitten by a shark off Coogee Beach on Saturday.

A 35-year-old woman is in a critical condition with severe arm and leg injuries, following the attack at one of Sydney's busiest beaches.

Mr Thistlewaite, who serves as an MP for an area that includes Coogee Beach, says his thoughts are with the woman who is now receiving treatment at St Vincent Hospital.

Mr Thistlewaite also paid tribute to a paddleboarder who rushed to pull the woman away from the shark.

"Particularly Charlie Verco, a life saver from Bondi, who's out here training for the Molokai Ski Race, and he acted quickly, he risked his own life to get the woman onto his surf skit to bring her to the shore as quickly as possible."

Police say they're exploring all possibilities in an investigation into the deaths of a father and his six-year-old daughter.

The pair's bodies were recovered from the Parramatta River near Concord in Sydney on Saturday, after police were first called to reports of a man in the water and later launched a search for the missing girl.

Superintendent Christine McDonald says detectives are examining every line of enquiry.

"In terms of whether this was an accident or whether it was intentional, that will form part of our enquires, we're looking at obviously everything it's definitely a line of enquiry but we are now investigating this - someone's died so we are investigating this on behalf of the coroner and the coroner's expectation is that we will leave no stone unturned."

US President Donald Trump is to take part in a G7 working session with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G7 summit on Tuesday [[16 June]], but no bilateral meeting between the two is scheduled.

President Zelenskyy said on Saturday that there is "new momentum" to his country's path towards membership in the European Union.

Speaking in his evening video address, he says it stems from confirmation by the EU that it's ready to open the first accession negotiations.

Mr Zelenskyy says the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine has highlighted the mutual dependency of Ukraine and Europe.

"The security challenges posed by Russia are not for one year or five years. Russia has chosen a long-term anti-European, anti-democratic strategy and is building its policies around it. Nothing else is coming from Moscow."
