Iranian officials say at least 14 people have been killed in the latest wave of attacks between the US and Iran.

The US says it has struck dozens of military targets inside Iran, while Tehran has launched missiles and drones at US military-linked sites across the Gulf in response to fresh American airstrikes.

The strikes have come hours after US President Donald Trump said recent Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz signaled the end of a fragile ceasefire and threatened to escalate the conflict if they didn't stop.

Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong says the ceasefire is coming apart, something the international community does not want.

"Well, it's certainly fraying around the edges, and we see continued sporadic conflict. What I would say is this: the world really is looking to this ceasefire to hold, to firm up. The world wants to see an end to this conflict, not just for the peoples of the region, but because of the effect on the global economy, on energy markets, and on the hip pocket of so many people around the world, including Australians."

Syrian authorities have arrested several suspects accused of a string of recent explosions in Damascus, including bombings during a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The Interior Ministry has said in a statement that they were taken into custody after security forces carried out raids in the Syrian capital and the surrounding areas.

An official with Syria's Internal Security Forces has blamed the Islamic State group, though it has not claimed responsibility.

The final casualty toll announced by Syria's Ministry of Health indicate the explosions killed one person and wounded 36 others.

The head of Telstra has returned from overseas as scrutiny continues over the telco's outage on Wednesday and wider questions about executive performance and pay.

Former deputy prime minister Wayne Swan has told Sky News that Telstra's corporate leadership need to be financially penalised and have their bonuses put on the line after the outage.

Telstra sacked more than 100 people and merged two of its biggest technology divisions in May in a restructure, but chief finance officer Michael Ackland dismissed links to the network's systems on Thursday.

At a press conference this morning, Telstra CEO Vicki Brady has apologised for the chaos that broke out on Wednesday.

"I have been in contact with Minister Wells throughout the incident, and I also I have been in contact with I have been in contact with Minister Wells throughout the incident, and I also spoke with the Prime Minister this morning to provide him with an update directly. We have let our customers and Australians down, and for that I am deeply sorry. I understand how much Australians rely on us to keep in touch, to work, and stay safe."

Concert pianist Jayson Gillham has lost his court case against the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra after claiming he was unlawfully dismissed.

The British-Australian performer had sued the orchestra after it cancelled a concert and ended its relationship with him in 2024, after Mr Gillham told the audience at a Melbourne recital that he believed Israel had deliberately targeted journalists in Gaza, then performed a piece dedicated to Palestinian journalists.

The Federal Court has found the orchestra acted to protect its business interests and reputation, and not because of Mr Gillham's political views.

Aviation pioneer Wally Funk has died aged 87, five years after finally reaching her dream of launching into space.

Ms Funk was one of 13 female pilots who went through the same tests as NASA’s all-male astronaut group in the Mercury 13 program in the early 1960s but never made it into orbit because women were not allowed to become astronauts.

She got her chance in 2021 aboard Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket, becoming the oldest person to go into space.

Ms Funk was also the first female inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration and the first female air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board.

To sport and in World Cup news,

France is through to the semi-finals after a 2-nil [[2-0]] quarter-final win over Morocco.

Goals from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé sealed the result, ending Morocco's impressive tournament run.

"Mbappe, simply irrepresible. He insists on his moment, 20 world cup goals for Kylian Mbappé."

That's Mbappé's 20th World Cup goal, and the eighth of this tournament.

That makes him tied with Lionel Messi on the Golden Boot ladder.
