US President Donald Trump says he remains hopeful diplomacy could end the conflict with Iran, despite Tehran insisting there are no direct talks between the two sides.
The fighting has been paused for a third straight day after 13 nights of strikes on Iran, following the collapse of negotiations over Tehran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking aboard the presidential plane, Air Force One, President Trump says mediating countries have asked both sides to hold fire to give diplomacy a chance.
"(We) pretty much destroyed their (Iranian) military and they want to meet and we're meeting. Let's see what happens is the chance we can make a deal. Without what we did, they wouldn't even be talking to us. They requested a meeting through their surrogates and directly. And we're meeting, and, you know, good things can happen."
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei says mediators are delivering messages from Washington, but maintains that Tehran is not engaged in direct negotiations with the United States.
Mr Trump has warned military action could resume if diplomacy fails.

A new oil refinery is being considered to shore up Australia's energy security in the face of ongoing global shocks.
A pre-feasibility study is looking into the option of a new large-scale oil refinery at Karratha in the Pilbara.
The project will officially be announced later today by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Western Australia Premier Roger Cook.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen says investing in onshore sovereign fuel refining capability is "sensible and prudent".
The announcement is the first agreement signed under the federal government's $10 million support for feasibility studies into new or existing fuel refining capabilities, announced as part of a $15 billion fuel security package.

Australia and Singapore have signed a new deal to strengthen energy security, critical supply chains and trade.
The new protocol under the Singapore-Australia Free Trade Agreement formalises a commitment made by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in April.
Singapore is Australia's largest fuel supplier, providing 55 per cent of Australia's petrol, 15 per cent of its diesel and 23 per cent of its aviation fuel.
Australia's Defence Minister, Richard Marles, says the deal is a reflection of the close relationship between the two countries.
"(It) embodies the trust and way of operating, which we have experienced between our two countries over the last few months. We also signed the industrial base resilience arrangement, which if you like is a defence industry version of the same thing. And that is to have secure co-operative supply chains between our two countries which are reliable in the most challenging and difficult of moments."

Victorian Labor MPs will meet later this morning with a leadership spill, expected as Premier Jacinta Allan fights to keep her job.
Deputy Premier Ben Carroll has confirmed he will challenge for the leadership, saying Ms Allan no longer has the support of the Labor caucus.
The outcome could determine who leads Labor into November's state election, with party members also likely to vote if MPs fail to reach a clear result.
Opposition leader Jess Wilson says changing Labor's leader will not solve Victoria's problems.
"We've got a tired, corrupt Labor government here in Victoria, and I know that Victorians don't want another unelected Labor premier. Ben Carroll is Jacinta Allan's 2IC — he's been sitting next to her every single day when she's been making decisions, and decisions as a whole as a cabinet, not to hold a royal commission, to see the financial mismanagement of this state."

The federal government has declared Australia's first nationwide test of the AusAlert emergency warning system a success.
A loud 10-second siren and emergency message were sent to compatible mobile phones across Australia yesterday afternoon as part of the nationwide trial.
Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain says the alert was successfully broadcast from 94 per cent of targeted mobile phone towers, exceeding the government's 90 per cent benchmark.
The new system is due to replace the current SMS-based emergency warning service when it is rolled out nationally in October.
"Cell broadcast technology is utilised in 35 countries around the world - we're not Robinson Crusoe we didn't create the technology but we absolutely want to take advantage of it in the Australian context - at the end of the day 99 per cent of the time states and territories will be using this system and it'll be the lead emergency agency of whatever the event is that'll be sending out these notifications."

To sport now ... Australia leads the Commonwealth Games medal tally in Glasgow with 51 medals in total, including 23 gold, ahead of England, Canada, Nigeria and Scotland in the top five.
Australian gymnast Kate McDonald won a gold medal in the uneven bars event at the Commonwealth Games.
The 25-year-old that she was the only gymnast to hit the 14.000-point mark and blitzed next-best, Canadian great Ellie Black, by 0.433 points, with Wales’ Emily Roper following for bronze.
Swimmer Sam Williamson won his second gold medal of the Games in the 50-metre breaststroke event.
