US President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end fighting in the Middle East within seven days.
Iran says the plan, delivered to Washington through Qatar, would restore normal shipping through the strategic waterway if the United States met agreed conditions.
Mr Trump says the deal is unacceptable, arguing Iran wants the Strait reopened because US pressure is hurting its economy.
"Well I'm rejecting their deal. They want to make a deal where they open the (Hormuz) Strait immediately because they're losing so badly. You know, you don't read that, or you don't see that in the fake news. But we're winning tremendously. We have total control of the Hormuz Strait, massive amounts of oil are coming out of the Hormuz Strait. They want to make a deal, and I think that's fine. I like making a deal, too...but I'm not...that deal would not be acceptable."
The Strait of Hormuz carries around a fifth of the world's traded oil and gas, and shipping through the waterway has been heavily disrupted by the conflict.

An estimated 700,000 people have filled central Paris for an outdoor Mass led by Pope Leo the Fourteenth, in one of the largest gatherings of his papacy.
Crowds lined the Champs-Elysees as the American pontiff travelled two kilometres by Popemobile to Place de la Concorde, where the Vatican says attendance exceeded the 600,000 people who had registered.
The gathering comes despite decades of declining church attendance in France, an officially secular country where the Catholic Church once held enormous influence.
Pope Leo used his homily to question where people now look for meaning and fulfilment.
"We all long for happiness, love and fulfilment. But from what source do we seek to quench our thirst? Are we content with material goods, immediate satisfactions, the countless little idols that promise us everything but leave our hearts empty?"
The Mass brought much of central Paris to a standstill under tight security.
Pope Leo has since travelled to the Catholic pilgrimage site of Lourdes as his four-day visit to France continues.

The family and partner of a junior police constable who died in a car crash while on duty have asked for her to remembered.
Twenty-year-old Constable Mia Lay died in the crash in the middle of a pursuit of an alleged vehicle theft - at about 1.30am on Friday (25 Sept) in the Sydney suburb of Redfern.
She had only been on the force for 16 months.
Constable Lay’s partner Daniel Vasquez, who is also a New South Wales Police officer, says there are plenty of positive qualities that Mia's family want people to remember.
"Mia loved what she did in the police. She was happy in the police and she was good at her job. And how loved she was by everyone in the community. She was the happiest girl I met. I would ask for everyone to remember her how stunning and beautiful she was. I know for myself, she will always be in my heart."

Residents of Hawaii’s Big Island are bracing for potentially life-threatening flooding, as hurricane Nolo moves towards the island.
Forecasters say the weather system is expected to strengthen to a major hurricane over the weekend bringing intense winds and dangerously heavy rain.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green has urged people to stay sheltered until the danger has passed.
More than 100 members of the National Guard have been positioned on the Big Island; and 400 statewide to support relief efforts.
The Director of the National Hurricane Centre, Michael Brennan, says rainfall is expected to bring significant impacts.
"We’re expecting isolated rainfall totals as high as 25 inches in southeastern and windward parts of the Big Island, up to about 10 inches on the eastern side of Maui. So, this type of rainfall could certainly produce life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides, again, especially on the Big Island in that southeastern part, in those areas of higher terrain."

Brisbane have pulled off a stunning late comeback to win a third-straight AFL premiership, defeating Fremantle by seven points at the MCG.
The Dockers were 17 points ahead with less than five minutes remaining, and closing in on their first premiership, before Brisbane kicked the final four goals to snatch a 96-to-89 victory.
Earlier, Kylie Minogue provided some fireworks of her own, as Melbourne's princess of pop returned home for the Grand Final pre-game show.
After hours of rain, the skies cleared in time for the 58-year-old to take the stage, performing a 20-minute set packed with hits including Love at First Sight, Spinning Around, Slow, Padam Padam and The Loco-Motion, accompanied by dancers, costume changes and pyrotechnics.
