An OpenAI agent has breached Australia's Medicare system. So are safeguards needed as AI becomes increasingly autonomous?
As Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is in New York, gathering with world leaders to discuss the future of artificial intelligence - news broke that an AI Agent from OpenAI has gone rogue and hacked into a Medicare Statistics Reporting Service Portal. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles says the federal government has established a taskforce to investigate the Medicare portal incident. OpenAI says the activity occurred in June, during an internal evaluation in which its models were researching public medical spending, but did not become aware of the unintended activity until August, and Services Australia was notified in September.
Now, as the Prime Minister says it may be the first time an AI agent has infiltrated a government service - is regulation keeping pacing with the technology?
