The seats which could decide the election are on a knife-edge.

The 2016 election threw up a surprise knife-edge result.

It's possible that both major parties could be heading for 72 seats each, with several electorates still in doubt as counting continues.

Despite that, record high levels of Australians wasted their votes by casting informal ballots.

Around 6% of votes in Australia are informal.

Here are five of the closest races in Australia right now, some with less than 100 votes between the candidates.

These are the seats which will determine the direction of the country for the next 3 years.

Chisholm, Victoria - Liberal Ahead by 0.1% (66 votes)
