Nailed it: Why ‘Polished Men’ have one painted fingernail this October

Since the start of October, men around the world have been painting one fingernail to join the Polished Man movement and raise awareness about physical and sexual violence against children.

Why only men? Well, women are encouraged to participate and contribute as well, but the male-centric focus is based on the depressing statistic that 90 per cent of all sexual assaults against children are carried out by men.

Australian non-for-profit organisation YGAP is behind the initiative and asks men to make a unique fashion statement: “Nail it to end it”.

The premise is simple enough: one polished nail on a man's hand to raise awareness and funds worldwide.
And the cause is one that has got a swag of celebrities involved as the fundraiser works towards the goal where children no longer suffer from violence and abuse - something that one in five children experience in a physical and/or sexually violent capacity before the age of 18.

Polished Man has taken off on social media, with Instagram generating thousands of posts as people all around the world embrace the #PolishedMan hashtag #nailedit to spread the word.
Among the famous faces lending their support are the Aussies Chris Hemsworth and champion swimmer Michael Klim, along with Hollywood star Zac Efron who was brought the movement stateside.
More than 61,000 people have been raising money on the Polished Man platform, which has generated over $513,000 in donations so far.

Big businesses have also got onboatd, lending their support, with donations going towards into trauma recovery and trauma prevention programs for children.

The fundraiser ends on October 15.
