Two small business owners meet Yellen

New US Federal Reserve Governor Janet Yellen has met two small business owners ahead of the start of the G20 finance ministers meeting.

Two suburban small business owners have met the world's most powerful central banker on the sidelines of the Group of 20 finance ministers meeting.

Treasurer Joe Hockey invited the business owners from Brisbane and western Sydney to meet new US Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen at Admiralty House on Friday to highlight what the meeting in Sydney over the weekend is about.

"We plucked them out of the phone book effectively and said `Come along and meet Dr Yellen'," Mr Hockey said on Saturday ahead of a bilateral meeting with Dr Yellen.

"(It was) drawing the link between the most powerful central banker in the world - someone who has the global economy in their hands - and someone on the ground making furniture or running a little tourism business.

"That's what it's about. We're all working for those people."

Dr Yellen, who is attending her first G20 finance ministers meeting, was pleased with the meeting and the optimism of the small business owners.

"It was nice to meet them," Dr Yellen said.

Mr Hockey and Dr Yellen met for an hour on Saturday.

The treasurer is hosting finance ministers and central bankers from the world's major economies in Sydney's CBD, the first gathering under Australia's 2014 presidency.

One of Mr Hockey's key aims is to get an agreement on a global growth target beyond the International Monetary Fund's forecast of 3.75 per cent for the coming year.
