Vatuvei credits teammates for try record

Warrior Manu Vatuvei, the first player to score 10 tries in 10 consecutive NRL seasons, says he's just lucky to be on the end of the work of his teammates.

Giant Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei deflected the attention on to his teammates after he reached another milestone in his NRL career.

When Vatuvei crashed over five minutes before half-time against the Sydney Roosters in Auckland on Saturday night, he became the first player to score at least 10 tries in 10 consecutive seasons.

"As I always say, I can't take all the credit for those tries," he said.

"The boys did a lot of that work and I was lucky enough to be at the end of it."

In April, the player known as The Beast brought up his 200th NRL appearance and celebrated with a brace as the Warriors downed the Wests Tigers 32-22.

A week later, against North Queensland, he grabbed the 141st four-pointer of his 12-season career to overtake Nigel Vagana as the most prolific New Zealander try-scorer in the NRL.

That tally now stands at 145.

But the 29-year-old, 28-Test Kiwi said records weren't something he targeted.

"I mainly concentrate on what I have to do for the team and those things will come from the back of it," he said.

"If I focus too much on stats, then there's no point in me playing."

Unfortunately for the home fans at Mt Smart Stadium, they weren't able to celebrate Vatuvei's latest achievement with a victory.

Instead, the Roosters spoilt the party with a 25-21 win thanks to a last-minute try to centre Blake Ferguson, making his return after two-and-half months out with an ankle injury.

It was a second defeat in a row for the Warriors, but it was a much better effort than they put up when going down 36-4 to South Sydney in Perth.

"We're all disappointed, but we improved a lot from what where we were last week," Vatuvei said.

"It was just little mistakes. They capitalised on them and that's just how it is. We've just got to keep our heads up and move forward."
