Marvel are producing their first female-led superhero film and have cast Oscar-winner Brie Larson as its star.
Much to the delight of fans across the globe, the Room and Trainwreck actress will be at the helm of Captain Marvel as the titular character - or Carol Danvers as she is known without the gloves and red and blue bodysuit.
While Larson has long been rumoured to take up the role, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, made the news official at San Diego’s Comic Con at the weekend when he introduced her as “the newest member of the Marvel family”.
The announcement itself was met with cheers, screams and rousing applause.

And the enthusiastic reactions on social media swiftly followed.
As some users were pointing out, the news came just after DC Comics released their trailer for Wonder Woman.
And as Black Panther star Lupita Nyong'o notes, Larson's appointment is only adding to the number of bad-ass women in superhero roles.
Larson herself seems to already be rejoicing in the news and posted an image of herself in a Marvel Studios cap with the words, “Call me Captain Marvel”.
And she will certainly be a force to be reckoned with. A former air-force combat pilot, Captain Marvel boasts super strength, precognition, energy absorption and redirection (namely through fists), and the ability to fly.
The movie is slated for release in March, 2019, but Larson is expected to make her debut sooner, with rumours her character will be introduced in upcoming Avengers film Infinity War Part 1 in 2018.
