Along with Iceland and Portugal, Malta is one of the countries that has competed the longest at Eurovision without a win. Debuting in 1971, they’ve come close to victory with several top three finishes but have yet to secure the top prize and witness the spectacle of the contest being staged in their beautiful country.
This year, the island nation’s fortunes lay with Claudia Faniello and her adult contemporary ballad, “Breathlessly”. Having beaten out 15 other competitors at the Maltese national selection competition, Faniello, who surely could be cast as one of the Real Housewives of Valleta, gushes with emotion and praise for her entry.
Sadly, her song is suffocated in cliché and is a bit of a yawn. There’s definitely no air here and zero hope of a maiden win for Malta. Let’s hope Claudia wears a banging frock so we can take something positive out of this.
