The artists of Eurovision 2017: Lucie Jones – “Never Give Up on You” (United Kingdom)

A decade of dismal results forced a rethink of the Eurovision selection process in the UK last year, with the BBC returning to a televised selection from which their entrant would be sourced. Even though victors Joe & Jake did not fare all that well in the 2016 contest, the merit in selecting an artist via public vote was adopted again this year.

Lovely Lucie Jones will fly the flag for the UK, with big ballad “Never Give Up On You” co-written by Danish contest winner Emmelie de Forrest. Jones is a formidable singer used to treading the boards in stage musicals such as Legally Blonde, Ghost The Musical and Les Misérables. She came to the UK’s attention during the 2009 season of the UK’s X Factor, where she was eventually knocked out of the contest in favour of Jedward (who represented Ireland at Eurovision in 2011 and 2012).

Although it's potentially the best ballad from the ladies this year, the Brexit backlash could come in to play. We may see Europe giving up on the UK and hurtling lovely Lucie to the bottom of the leaderboard.
