After nearly nine years of opposition and debate, Adani Mining has finally commenced construction at their Carmichael mine project in Central Queensland.

“Construction on the Carmichael Project formally commenced following the receipt of the final environmental management approval from the Queensland Government,” an Adani Mining spokesperson told SBS Hindi.

Queensland's Environment Department last week approved the mine's groundwater management plan thus giving the project its final environmental approval.

A week later, around 60 people have begun construction activity that includes work on the mine access road.

Adani Mining has claimed the Carmichael Project will see 1500 direct jobs and 6750 indirect jobs created at peak points of construction and when the project ramps up.

“Initial construction activity included clearing and surveying for access on to the mine site in line with Stage 2 construction approvals.

“Other activities onsite include but is not limited to the commencement of fencing works, geotechnical work, water management and clearing,” they said.

Adani faced several hurdles, ranging from protests by environmental activists to legal battles before the 2019 Federal elections dealt a big blow to Labor in Queensland.

Mr Shayne Neumann, MP for Labor’s only remaining Queensland regional seat in Blair said the state government’s indecision and forced delays with the Adani coal mine in central Queensland damaged federal Labor’s prospects in the region.

“They need to make a decision on the Adani project, they can’t procrastinate anymore, Queenslanders need certainty, they require that for regional and rural Queensland,’’ said Mr Neumann.

Following the pressure, the Queensland government set itself a three-week deadline to resolve two outstanding environmental approvals.

On June 14th, the mining giant received the last major approval. The Queensland Environment Department approved the company’s groundwater management plan, following which the construction commenced this week.

The Indian-mining company said the construction work was being conducted safely in line with the environmental requirements.

“All activities are being conducted safely and in line with Adani Mining’s environmental requirements, including have wildlife spotters onsite monitoring all construction activity.
