Just a day after the World Health Organisation warned of an alarming surge in measles across Europe, Indonesia's most influential Islamic organisation has issued a religious fatwa against taking the measles vaccine. The Indonesian Ulama Council has declared the Rubella-Measles vaccine "haram," or religiously forbidden. But analysts and community figures in Australia are suggesting the fatwa is not expected to carry significant influence in Australia.
