My neighbour’s kitchen: Brazilian chocolate caramels (brigadeiros)

In Brazil, a party isn’t a party unless there are plates of little chocolate caramel sweets that we call brigadeiros.

They can be made in different shapes, and decorated with all kinds of toppings, such as nuts, sprinkles or cocoa powder, and are nearly always served in colourful paper patty cases.

I only recently found out that brigadeiros were named after a famous Brazilian politician from last century, who was originally an air force brigadier. He ran for president twice unsuccessfully, but was apparently renowned for being very handsome.

I’ve been making brigadeiros a lot lately for baby showers, but they are served at any special
get-together or celebration. It’s also become quite trendy to give them as gifts, which is great as they are so easy to make. You can even whip them up in the microwave, but if you do, the secret is to stop and stir often!
