Halloween is fertile ground for novelty food and this year is no exception.
We’re not just talking about the classics – although spaghetti brains and dead man’ fingers go down a trick (or treat) on All Hallows Eve. This year, restaurants around the globe are having impressive fun with their Halloween specials. Be surprised (and a little spooked?) by these treats.
Hainanese for Halloween
Asian eatery E.P & L.P in Los Angeles is marketing its ‘Ghoulish Chicken’ dish as too scary to eat, but we’re fairly sure we’d find a way around that. E.P & L.P’s head chef Louis Tikaram has devised a wicked spin on Hainanese chicken, serving a jet black ginger-poached whole chicken served with pickled cucumbers, spring onions, garlic and chilli. For this Halloween special, Tikaram is steering clear of his usual poultry and instead using Silkie chickens, known for having black skin right through to the bone.
Devilish delights at Chefs Gallery
Sydney’s Chefs Gallery Chinese is putting on a show for Halloween this year, with fright-night inspired Devil Sago Delights available from October 29-31. Taking cues from all things devilish, these Chefs Gallery desserts are built with meringue “laid to rest” on chocolate soil and silky coconut sago, finished with Chinese-spiced pumpkin sponge.
Soft serve with extras
Sydney’s home of unusual soft serve flavours (think sea salt, tomato and pandan) Aqua S strikes again with special flavours and toppings for Halloween. Matcha Cheese Cake and Lemon Lime Bitters will be available until October 31 – top it with googely eyes, marshmallow ears and popcorn teeth to create a monster of a soft serve.
Disney take
Tokyo Disneyland and Disney Sea Resort are meccas of all things kawaii, so it’s no surprise to see its food vendors fulfilling the ‘treat’ end of the Halloween idiom. Check out (read: eat) pumpkin-shaped scallop crème croque buns, Jack Skellington curry bread, poison-apple burgers and beer potion.
Pablo Cheese Tart
While we’re waiting patiently for Pablo to grace Australian shores, we’ll continue to drool over the limited edition miniature cheese tarts available at the Malaysia branch until the end of October. The tarts are topped with fresh pumpkin paste and filled with smooth azuki fresh cream.
Shake it all about
When it comes to Halloween-inspired food, America won’t be beat – as evidenced by the Brownstone Pancake Factory’s Cinn-Ful Pumpkin Halloween Insane Shake available until the end of October. We hope no-one’s afraid of heights.
Ghoulish desserts
Edible eyeballs, monster-shaped ice cream cones and bats made out of Oreos – New Jersey dessert temple The Moo is delivering tricks and treats in equal measure this Halloween.
And finally, the Halloween doffle
This Mexican waffle-and-donut house (hence the genius name, Doffle) is going all out this year, because it wouldn’t be Halloween without at least a few novelty donuts.
