A Taste of the Philippines with Yasmin Newman is an unmissable journey through Filipino food, culture and beauty. Newman's passion for food and travel began as a child on family holidays with her mother who is from Mindoro in the Philippines.

"When you're a second-generation immigrant, you can feel very conflicted about your culture, but I think those trips to the Philippines really anchored it for us," Newman says. "We saw the Philippines as this magical place and felt sorry for everyone else who didn't have this jewel heritage to lean on."

A Taste of the Philippines

Newman's show and cookbooks are filled with stories of community, family and the myths and meaning found in the Philippines' many shores. Every dish is inspired by the tropical landscape and waters that bind the 7,107 islands of the Philippines together as one.

Plunge fried chicken in sweet and sticky banana ketchup to glaze, then douse it in kalamansi juice and fiery chilli.

One-pan mung bean and tomato rice with crispy onion

This one-pan vegetarian centrepiece or side is inspired by a heart-warming munggo guisado, with pretty little mung-bean pearls strewn on top and crisp onion rings taking the place of chicharron.

Braised pork belly with coconut, pineapple and chilli

This sweet and unctuous braise is not simply about the heat. The chillies are mild in parts, fruity and wonderfully colourful. It’s also tempered by coconut milk plus pineapple served fresh and sweet.
