Sound of countdown to midnight, followed by sounds of music and fireworks ...

"We came here at 1am, camping outside. But it's hot weather, so it's a long fight ... (laughs)"

"We've driven all the way from Melbourne just for this. So I hope it doesn't disappoint us ... (laughs)"

Sounds of music and fireworks, followed by crowd cheering ....

Man: "I like coming back here every year. It's nice and just a great atmosphere. Just a nice place to be and just enjoy a few drinks and be around people".

Woman: "Mum hasn't been into the city for 60 years and we decided we'd come and just share the enjoyment"

As usual, the Sydney Harbor Bridge was at the forefront of Australia's New Years Eve celebrations.

The fireworks display, which cost $5.8 million dollars to produce this year, is estimated to be worth $133 million to the local economy each year.

People flocked to spots around the harbour, hours in advance, to try and find a good viewing spot.

Some secured their spots especially early, despite high temperatures the night before.

"We came here at 1am, camping outside. But it's hot weather, so it's a long fight ... (laughs)"

But despite the potentially unsavoury weather, the prospect of catching the show in-person remained alluring.

"We've driven all the way from Melbourne just for this. So I hope it doesn't disappoint us ... (laughs)"

And with the show featuring more than 100,000 pyrotechnic effects accompanied by dramatic orchestral music, it was unlikely to have disappointed many.

In Melbourne, more than 350,000 people swarmed into the C-B-D to catch a glimpse of its fireworks display.

These revellers were interviewed by the A-B-C.

Woman: "Mum hasn't been into the city for 60 years and we decided we'd come and just share the enjoyment"

Brisbane's biggest ever fireworks display was launched from four locations along the Brisbane River, with tens of thousands of people watching from vantage points across the city.

Adelaide ensured its status as a UNESCO City of Music was promoted with live music.

Predicted monsoonal weather held off for celebrations in In the Northern Territory, though rain did fall in Canberra.

Public festivities also took place in Hobart and Perth, which was the last major city in the country to bring in the new year.

Police say they are generally pleased with the behaviour of revellers in the big cities, with most arrests and charges issued being drug-related, not behaviour-related.
