German prosecutors have indicted an Indian couple for spying on Sikh opposition and suspected Kashmiri separatists in Germany.
50-year-old Manmohan S. and his 51-year-old wife Kanwal Jit K. have been accused of feeding information to India’s external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the prosecutors declared on Tuesday.
In their statement, the prosecutors further revealed that while Manmohan started working for the intelligence agency from January 2015 onwards, his wife, however, started her alliance in July 2017.
The two used to supply information to an agency handler who was stationed in Germany.
Releasing information about the couple, the prosecutors claimed that the couple received a total of USD 8,100 (AUD 11,348 approximately) for their spying activities.
Espionage is a serious offence in Germany and if convicted, the couple could reportedly face up to ten years in jail.
Their full names have not been released, in line with the German privacy laws.
In 2016, a German immigration official, identified only by the initials T.S.P. was also accused of spying on members of the Sikh community.
At the time, the prosecutors had said that the 58-year-old official had accessed database and passed on information about suspected Sikh extremists, while he was working at an immigration office in the western town of Ostwesfalesn.
