According to Healthdirect Australia, an estimated three out of four women experience a vaginal yeast infection or thrush in their lifetime, and it can recur.

Key Points
  • According to Dr. Angelica Logarta-Scott, vaginal yeast infection, or thrush, is an infection of the vagina or vulva caused by the fungus Candida, and it is not considered a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Symptoms include intense itching, burning, pain during sex or urination, and thick white discharge from the vagina or vulva.
  • Men can also develop the infection, often through a partner, with higher risk in those who are uncircumcised, taking antibiotics, or have diabetes.
  • Vaginal thrush can affect women at any age but is most common between 15 and 50 years old, and is rare in prepubescent girls or postmenopausal women.
