From domestic helper in Hong Kong to facing discrimination in Australia: A Queensland chef and café owner's story of resilience and inspiration

Born in the northern Philippines, Esther Peru-Hoy spent a decade working as a domestic helper in Hong Kong before a visit to Australia inspired her to dream of returning. She went on to make that dream a reality and has now been living in Queensland for almost 20 years, building a life with her husband, as a chef and café owner on the Gold Coast.

Due to poverty in the Philippines, Esther Peru-Hoy from Ilocos Sur took a bold step and worked as a domestic helper in Hong Kong to support her family, until she was given the opportunity to start a new life in Australia. In Queensland, she faced discrimination and numerous challenges, but through perseverance and determination, she succeeded as a chef and café owner—becoming an inspiration to many women and Filipino migrants.
