Haemorrhoids affect 300,000 Australians annually, yet 80 percent recover with GP guidance, mainly among pregnant, overweight, or constipated individuals.

Key Points
  • Symptoms of haemorrhoids include bleeding, itching, pain, and discomfort in the back passage (anus).
  • According to Dr. Angelica Logarta-Scott, the risk of developing haemorrhoids is higher among those who are pregnant, overweight, frequently experience diarrhea or constipation, strain while passing stool, or spend long periods using gadgets on the toilet.
  • The haemorrhoidal veins in the anus help control the passage of stool and gas and maintain proper closure of the anus, but when swollen or enlarged, they can cause pain, inflammation, and discomfort.

If you have mild haemorrhoids, it is important to implement lifestyle changes early to prevent worsening. This includes following a high-fibre diet, drinking plenty of water, avoiding constipation, limiting time spent sitting on the toilet, and engaging in regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight.
