Can Australia really defend itself?

Australia wants to boost its defence capabilities. According to the latest Defence White Paper, 58 billion dollars will be spent on defence by 2025 alone. New submarines, possibly from Germany, will be ordered, and the number of uniformed personnel will increase to its largest size (62,400) since 1993. But how wise is the move, and can Australia really be defended, given its huge size? We put these questions to an Australian-German expert in Canberra, Dr Stephan Fruehling from the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University (ANU). Dr Fruehling was a member of the government's 2015 Defence White Paper expert advisory panel.
