A lonely tree on a subantarctic island has radioactive traces from the atomic bomb tests of the 1950s and 60s in its wood. Scientists from Sydney now believe that the tree they call the loneliest in the world defines the beginning of the Anthropocene, the epoch in which humans influence the Earth's history.
