In a bid to attract Indian cricket fans to Australia for next year's T20 Cricket World Cup, Prime Minister Scott Morrison posted a personal message on Twitter.

"What do you think, Narendra Modi?" said the tweet, with a promotional video by the Tourism Australia.

The video promotes Australian tourist attractions with a cricket commentary in the background.

"Looking forward to Australia hosting the T20WorldCup next year. TourismAus have a great new advert, encouraging Indian cricket fans to consider a trip out here for it. What do you think, @narendramodi?" Mr Morrison tweeted.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he found the video' lovely.'

"When my good friend and the PM of Australia Scott Morrison personally invites, I am sure many more tourists and cricket lovers will plan to visit Australia. And our cricket fans are also the liveliest," he responded.

The federal government had announced a campaign to promote the ICC tournaments and Australia to cricket fans in India.

The ICC has announced the Men's and Women's T20 World Cup as separate, standalone events in Australia, with the Women's event from 21st February to 8th March 2020, and the Men's taking place from 18th October to 15th November 2020.

Federal Minister for Tourism Simon Birmingham said in July this year that a $5 million campaign would be used for marketing activities to drive visitors to both the women's and men's tournaments, as well as increase Australia's broader destination appeal in India.

Approximately 100,000 international visitors had travelled to Australia when the country co-hosted the ICC One Day World Cup in 2015 with New Zealand.

Tourists from India are the fastest-growing short term visitors to Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), when trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for December 2017 and December 2018 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for India (13.3%), followed by Japan (12.4%) and Singapore (8.1%).

In December 2018, 31,200 Indians visited Australia on a short term basis. The highest visitors were from China (121,100), which has taken over from New Zealand (115,900).

The United States stands at number three (67,900) followed by the UK (60,800), Japan (41,400) and Singapore (38,600).

Many states and territories have also taken steps to attract more Indians tourists.

Tourism Australia has been advertising aggressively in Indian markets in recent months.

Popular Bollywood actor Parineeti Chopra was appointed as a brand ambassador for Tourism Australia in 2017.
