The deadly smog in the Indian capital city, New Delhi is back.
A public health emergency has been declared by doctors in Delhi as air quality in the world’s most polluted capital city reached alarming levels on Tuesday.
The air quality index in Delhi fell to its worst this year, 448 on a scale of 500, The Indian Express reported.
The situation has been likened to a 'gas chamber' by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Delhi has become a gas chamber. Every year this happens during this part of year. We have to find a soln to crop burning in adjoining states — Arvind Kejriwal (@ArvindKejriwal) November 7, 2017
Burning of crop in nearby states have been blamed for a surge in airborne pollutants. Low wind speeds, dust from construction sites, rubbish burning in the capital also contribute to increasing pollution levels in Delhi.
The Indian Medical Association said the country’s capital was suffering a health emergency and called for an upcoming half-marathon to be cancelled to avoid “disastrous health consequences”.
Residents were warned to avoid leaving their homes. Especially high-risk individuals – elderly, children, patients with respiratory or cardiac ailments or pregnant women – were being advised to restrict outdoor activities.
Mr Kejriwal met with government officials on Tuesday afternoon to consider a response to the crisis.
