A thief has died while robbing an Indian restaurant in Melbourne’s South-East on Saturday.

Two thieves struck at a popular Indian restaurant, Indian Mahal in Baxter, Melbourne’s South-east on Saturday night when the restaurant worker was closing his shop around 11 pm.

The pair threatened the worker and got into a scuffle, bit his thumb and tried to steal his car when one of the robbers is believed to have slipped on the footpath and hit his head.

The man died and his accomplice abandoned him and took off, the police said.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said they were investigating the bizarre incident.

“The exact cause of his death is yet to be established, however, is not being treated as suspicious.

“The victim of the robbery has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“The second offender fled the scene,” Ms Batty said.

SBS Hindi has reached out to the restaurant for a comment.
