A US Senate hearing has questioned top executives of social media giants Youtube, Snapchat and Tik Tok about the safety measures for children. The Senate Commerce subcommittee is investigating how tech companies treat young audiences and how algorithms and product design choices can amplify harms, addiction and privacy intrusions.


In Australia, a new Online Safety Act will take effect from January next year.

It will strengthen the powers of the e-Safety Commissioner and the Communications Minister to protect Australians from online harm and set up new industry codes for the tech giants.
