For Fahmi Fathurrohman and Simran Kaur, performing in Rahwana play wasn't just about acting as it was also about learning culture and building relationships with other multicultural cast members.
The Rahwana theatre production took the stage on Saturday, 8 November at RMIT Capitol Theatre in Melbourne. Perwira, or the Indonesian Society of Victoria, organised the performance, which brought together performers from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Indonesia, Australia, India, Turkey, Japan, Nepal and Punjab.
Despite the highly multicultural cast, the production remained deeply connected to Indonesian culture through traditional Indonesian arts like the Kecak dance.
Fahmi Fathurrohman, who played Rama, shared about his first experience performing alongside a culturally diverse cast, the challenges he faced during the production and why he feels proud to showcase Indonesian culture to Australian audiences.
SBS Indonesian also interviewed Simran Kaur, a model and actress of Nepali-Punjabi heritage who played Sinta, as she shares what it was like to portray a character she has known since childhood, the biggest challenges she faced and what made her first theatre experience so memorable.
