Director Joko Anwar's latest work, Ghost in the Cell, achieved box-office success and was released in 148 countries, highlighting social issues reflecting the concerns of the Indonesian public.
Film Ghost in the Cell achieved tremendous success, becoming a box-office hit and drawing 3.4 million viewers in Indonesia. This latest work by Indonesian director Joko Anwar is also scheduled for releases in 148 countries.
Speaking to SBS Indonesian, Joko Anwar said that the connection between the film's story and societal issues is what garnered such a positive response — not only domestically but also from audiences abroad, particularly the Indonesian diaspora.

"Ghost in the Cell tells the story of a deeply corrupt system — and that is exactly what is happening in Indonesia right now," explained the director, who has helmed 12 films.
"The prisoners in Ghost in the Cell serve as an allegory for the citizens of Indonesia."

Although Ghost in the Cell entertains by blending two genres popular with the Indonesian public, namely horror and comedi, Joko Anwar recognises that the social issues addressed in the film are far from a light topic. This is why he was "surprised" and "grateful" that the film was so well-received.
