The Bandung's group Muhibah Angklung is on their mission of performing around the world. This is their story.
During his Master studies in Germany, Maulana M. Syuhada was involved in an Indonesian community group that performed in an international cultural event. At that evening, he played angklung.
“It was the first time that I was given standing applause by the audience, for a lifetime... I can still feel it until now,” he told SBS Indonesian, adding that the audience's reception abroad was amazing to the angklung performance.
From there, Syuhada had an aspiration that young people should experience something similar to what he felt through their involvement in the Muhibah Angklung group he founded.
The lecturer in Industrial Engineering at Bandung's Pasundan University said that although the group's journey was not easy, especially from the funding side, he felt a special joy when he saw the members develop personally through angklung.
“The ones who were shy, quiet, didn't have any public speaking [skills], have no organisational skills, or even kids who had just finished high school and wanted to work straightaway, or who didn't have a history of college degree in their family... They then see the world,” Syuhada said.
Eventually [Muhibah Angklung's members] could be a “game changer” for their family.Maulana Syuhada, Founder of Muhibah Angklung
