The Giuseppe Conte-led government has placed a mandatory quarantine on the Lombardy region and 14 provinces in four other northern regions, affecting a total of around 16 million people. The Italian government’s decree has also shut down outdoor sites and museums. It comes as the COVID-19 death toll in Italy jumps by more than 100 to 366, and the number of confirmed cases rises to over 7,300. Journalist Carlo Fusi reports.

Only people with proven, work-related reasons or health problems will be able to move in and out of the exclusion zones, with the new measures lasting until at least the 3rd of April.
