Italian stage director Leo Castaldi came to the attention of the international media for directing Giuseppe Verdi's "Traviata" at the Teatro Real in Madrid, the first major international theatre to reopen after the COVID-19 crisis.

Leo Castaldi in staging the opera had to follow the strict guidelines of social distancing imposed by local authorities and the theatre. In this interview he explains how he decided to divide the stage into squares clearly marked with red lines.

"The red lines, looking at the space within them, symbolised confinement and isolation. But looking at the joining points, they represented social connection and solidarity", says Castaldi.

The reopening of the Teatro Real of Madrid has given hope to theatres and artists around the world who are struggling victims of the pandemic.

Italian tenor Ivan Magrì performed the role of Alfredo in Castaldi's Traviata at the Teatro Real of Madrid and in an interview to SBS Italian he expressed his concern for the future of many of his colleagues.
