Antonella Cavallo is Associate Lecturer at the Torrens Resilience Institute at Flinders University and has worked in emergency relief and recovery for the Government of South Australia. In this Australian summer marred by bushfires, record temperatures and unbreathable area in numerous locations, the experience of Dr Cavallo, as an expert in complex risk management, disaster prevention and preparedness (she also coordinated interstate aid to Queensland after the passage of Cyclone Debbie in 2017), is certainly precious.
In addition to underlining how the fire emergency of these last few months is linked to climate change, Dr Cavallo has not hidden her irritation towards those who - even at a political level - continue to underestimate or ignore what scientists have been telling us for decades.
