Dal summit ASEAN nasce una strategia comune per rispondere alle sfide della regione, tra cui il terrorismo, la questione del Mar Cinese Meridionale e il commercio.
Nel fine settimana si è concluso a Sydney il summit ASEAN, al termine del quale il Primo Ministro Malcolm Turnbull e il leader del Sud Est asiatico hanno concordato una strategia comune per rispondere alle sfide della regione, tra cui il terrorismo, la questione del Mar Cinese Meridionale e il commercio.
"Today, nearly one million Australians claim southeast Ancestry, and more than 700,000 Australians speak one of the languages of ASEAN at home. The countries of ASEAN are among our closest neighbours. They are our friends, and our increasingly our family as well. Our shared geography and our shared interests mean we also share our future. The summit has helped shape and chart our future together. More security and stability. More prosperity and more opportunity."
I leader che hanno preso parte al summit hanno annunciato un accordo per condividere informazioni su minacce alla sicurezza online ma anche risorse di polizia.
Secondo Turnbull l'accordo, dettagliato nella cosiddetta Sydney Declaration, sarà essenziale per contenere la minaccia di attacchi terroristici.
"What may appear to be an inconsequential piece of information in the hands of one police service or one security service, may be the piece that solves the jigsaw in another country. And so sharing is critically important. We have been able to disrupt very, very serious threats to security in Australia because of a piece of information that has come from overseas."
I leader ASEAN hanno anche sottolineato alla Cina l'importanza di una libertà di navigazione nel Mar Cinese Meridionale, enfatizzando l'importanza di non militarizzare la zona.
Turnbull ha dichiarato che l'Australia intende creare un Code of Conduct che sia legalmente vincolante - intento condiviso dal vice primo ministro del Vietnam Phạm Bình Minh.
"That is not enough. We need a legal binding COC (Code of Conduct). Because anything happen in the South China Sea it will affect not only the claimant state but also affects the stability and prosperity in the region."
Turnbull ha anche annunciato che i leader ASEAN hanno promesso di battersi contro il protezionismo, sostenendo la proposta di una Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, l'accordo commerciale RCEP.
"There was very strong support around the table for (a) swift conclution to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). It covers half the world population and a third of the world's trade. If we can secure a good agreement, it would ensure on the back of the TPP-11, tht the Indo-Pacific continues to be the fulcrum of open and free trade."
Singapore sarà la sede che ospiterà il 32mo e 33mo summit ASEAN rispettivamente ad aprile e novembre.
