"I guess I have been lucky to be born into house of love in the middle wars and bombs." Dr Ghafouri posted on her Facebook recently. Born in the mountains of Kurdistan into a Peshmerga family, she survived the wars and settled in Sweden together with her family nearly 40 years ago.

When ISIS attacked the Yazidis in Sinjar, Dr Nemam Ghafouri left her job, peace and security of Sweden as well as her family, and dedicated all her time to help the desperate Yazidi survivors. She also helped rescue many women and girls and reunite them with their families.
The 52-year-old, Dr Ghafouri was the founder and Chairperson of Joint Help for Kurdistan (JHK), a non-governmental, not for profit charity organisation, that operated in the refugee camps in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. JHK also helps Kurdish and Yazidi refugee in the Rojava region/northern Syria.
SBS Kurdish last interviewed Dr Ghafouri in August 2020, regarding the impact of COVID-19 on Yazidis in the Internally Displaced People’s (IDP) camps.
