WA to suffer under barley trade tariffs

The Federal Government says it is committed to resolving a trade dispute with China over Australian barley exports, either through direct negotiations with Beijing or an appeal to the World Trade Organisation.

Trade tariffs introduced by China will hit hardest in Western Australia, where a majority of the state’s estimated 3,000 barley growers have already planted this year’s crop.
The announcement came as a result of Chinese authorities'  ongoing anti-dumping investigation into Australian barley.

The tariffs make Australian barley more expensive for potential buyers in China and could price Australian exporters out of its biggest market, costing them $500 million a year.
