‘A message of perseverance’: Ethnomusicologist Lochan Rijal on Tihar songs and ‘Paurakhi’

Lochan Rijal is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and scholar of ethnomusicology. He is a researcher of Nepali folk music and traditional instruments and has also been sharing his knowledge through teaching. While Rijal is well known for his use of Nepali traditional instruments like sarangi, he also incorporates contemporary gear in his musical performances. Currently, Rijal is Head of the Department of Music at Kathmandu University’s School of Arts. He pursued higher studies in music at Visva Bharati University (Shantiniketan), India and Arizona State University, USA. On the occasion of Tihar, our Nepal correspondent Girish Subedi spoke with Rijal about the role of music during the annual festival lights.
