Shrijana Ghising is chasing a Paralympic medal for Australia in the LA28 Games.
Every year, 17 September is celebrated as Australian Citizenship Day.
Since 2001, this day has been marked on this date, with citizenship ceremonies and other events held across the country to welcome new Australian citizens.
Shrijana Ghising is a para taekwondo champion who plans to represent green and gold on the world stage.
Born in Makwanpur, south of Kathmandu in Nepal, the para taekwondo champion came to Australia for a holiday.
Now she’s chasing a Paralympic medal for Australia in the LA28 Games.
Under special powers, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke expedited Srijana Ghising’s citizenship application so she could compete for Australia at upcoming tournaments.
She officially became an Australian citizen at a ceremony in Melbourne’s inner-west in June.
She has recently won gold for Australia at the 2026 World Taekwondo Para Grand Prix in Muju, South Korea.
The 26-year-old has now set her sights on the 2028 Paralympic Games to be held in Los Angeles.
