Why is private health insurance premiums on the rise in Australia?

After a brief reprieve in April, most health insurers increased their premiums from October 1st. It means some policyholders could face two premium increases in the next seven months - a move criticised as 'out of touch' by consumer advocacy groups. While the COVID pandemic is far from over, it appears the welcomed pause on increasing the cost of private health is.
