Senior Gumatj leader and Yothu Yindi Foundation Chair Djawa Yunupiŋu has announced plans to establish the Dilak Land Council, a new standalone body representing 13 Yolŋu clans across northeast Arnhem Land.

Revealed during the Garma Festival during his speech on day two, the proposal would see the region separate from the Northern Land Council, marking one of the most significant changes to the Northern Territory's land rights system in nearly 50 years.

Djawa Yunupiŋu said the new council would give Traditional Owners greater control over land governance while continuing to work in partnership with the Northern Land Council.
