Foreign Minister Penny Wong used her keynote address at the Garma Festival to highlight the enduring relationships between First Nations peoples and their Pacific neighbours, describing them as a strategic national advantage for Australia.
Speaking on behalf of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Ms Wong outlined the government's shared vision for the Pacific and acknowledged leaders who were in attendance.
She rejected the idea of Australia as a "monoculture", saying First Nations histories, cultures and voices are central to Australia's identity and should play a greater role in shaping the nation's foreign policy.
