Minister for Indigenous Australians and Yanyuwa woman Malarndirri McCarthy addressed the crowd at Gulkula, reflecting on the significance of the 50th anniversary of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act NT.


She spoke about her family's experience as the first Yanyuwa people to have their connection to Country tested under the landmark legislation, describing it as an "alien moment."

During her address, Minister McCarthy also acknowledged Senior Gumatj leader Djawa Yunupiŋu's earlier announcement outlining plans for a new Dilak Land Council, recognising its significance for the future of land governance in northeast Arnhem Land.
