Koori Knockout 2025: James Maloney on His First Koori Knockout Experience

Former NRL player and former assistant coach for the North Queensland Cowboys, James Maloney, swapped the big stadium lights for the community spirit of the Koori Knockout this year, marking his first time at one of the biggest gatherings of First Nations people.

This was James’s first time attending the Knockout, where he joined Darkinjung Waters as one of their coaches. For him, the experience went far beyond the game itself. The Knockout is more than just a rugby league carnival, it’s a celebration of culture, connection and community.
