Perhaps actor Ssumier S Pasricha didn't himself realise the potential of the character Pammi Aunty he created just over a year ago. Within a few months, 'Pammi-isms' like 'Sarla Bhenji', 'MBA' and especially the takiya kalaam 'Hor Ki' became widely recognised, catapulting the character to dizzying heights of fame and recognition.
Ssumier has gone on to win multiple awards over the past year or so, with a huge recognition coming from the well known magazine India Today last month naming him as one of the "Icons of Modern India".
Even though Pammi Aunty's outrageous get up of huge pink glasses, a towel roll and rollers seem quite unrealistic at the first instance, there is no doubt that she has struck a chord globally. One reason why the Pammi Aunty sketches have resonated instantly and become such a phenomenon is that she talks and gossips and spreads rumours and exaggerates things exactly like that typical Punjabi Aunty every one bemoans in their social circle.

But on cue, people have been quick to embrace the vitriolic gossip mongering middle aged woman, and Pammi Aunty themed parties are becoming popular too.
Buoyed by his success, Ssumier has further diversified from producing social media sketches of Pammi Aunty, and has become quite popular at live shows, even going on to picking up a full television series with Balaji Productions.

But speaking to SBS Punjabi, he always maintains that Australia commands a very special place in his heart - and fans will soon be treated to his live shows Down Under. And continuing the Aussie collaboration, Ssumier will continue to produce videos exclusively for SBS Punjabi for the remainder of 2017. So watch the space...
