NSW Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Multiculturalism John Ajaka attended a traditional ceremony at the Museum of Contemporary Art on Friday night before the opera house turned golden between 8pm to midnight on Friday, 21st October to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of light.

The Indian Consul General Mr Vanlalvawna also attended this event. At this occasion, several senior citizens of Indian origin were recognized for their community service by the NSW Government.

The festival has spiritual significance to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains but when it comes to celebrations nobody is excluded.

People commemorate Diwali typically decorate their homes with Diyaas (earthen pots), fancy electric bulbs and other light fixtures to fill their homes with decorative light.

Diwali commemorates the triumph of light over darkness or good overcoming evil.

Diwali has been embraced by all Australians wanting to celebrate the true essence of multiculturalism and harmony.
