Inspired by his father’s and grandfather's careers in the police force in India, Raman always dreamed of wearing the uniform. After arriving in Australia as an international student and facing 11 rejections, he is now an Australian Border Force officer in Cairns, helping protect Australia’s borders while serving the country he calls home.
Speaking to SBS Punjabi, Raman says his dream of wearing a uniform was shaped by his family’s legacy of service. Coming from a family of police officers in India, including his father and grandfather, he grew up inspired by their careers and wanted to follow a similar path.
“Wearing the uniform was always a dream for me,” Raman says.
Raman arrived in Australia as an international student and faced several challenges while working towards that goal.
After 11 unsuccessful attempts, he says patience and determination helped him continue pursuing his ambition.
During this period, Raman supported himself through various jobs, including dishwashing, working as a security guard and as a chef.
Now an Australian Border Force (ABF) officer based in Cairns, Raman says the struggles were worth it, describing it as “the privilege of serving my adopted country”.
He says his cultural background also helps him connect with travellers from India and make their experience with border services smoother.
Raman reflects on the setbacks, lessons and determination that shaped his journey from an international student to an Australian Border Force officer.
