Hailing from the small village of Mian Kot in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, Ajay Deep Singh began his sporting journey as a runner before moving into wrestling and later training in jujitsu. Now combining those disciplines in the fast-growing sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Singh has risen to become the second-ranked Amateur Men’s Bantamweight fighter across Australia and New Zealand. As he prepares to enter the Pro league this season, Singh speaks to SBS Punjabi about the chance encounter with a coach that changed his life, the discipline behind his rise in MMA, and what being a “real fighter” means to him.
