Thousands of never-before-seen cabinet papers detailing 226 decisions made by the Australian government in 1998 and 1999 have been released by the National Archives.
"The first of January would hit Australia first before it hit Europe and America. And I was getting reports from midnight on," said former Treasurer Peter Costello about how he spent his New Year's Eve waiting to see if the feared Y2K bug would bite.
